5 Epic Heartfelt Highlights from Deadpool and Wolverine’s MCU Adventure

A New Chapter in the MCU

Deadpool and Wolverine, a third movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, aims to poke fun at its corporate parentage and fit into the narrative parameters of the MCU. The film features Matthew Macfadyen as a sinister multiverse bureaucrat and Emma Corrin as a villain in exile. However, the script is thin and derivative, and nods to other shows and movies don’t make it feel fresher. Director Levy, who previously directed Reynolds in sci-fi comedies Free Guy and The Adam Project, doesn’t have much feel for the splattery violence that is a staple of the Deadpool movies. Despite its carnage, meta-humor, and R-rated sensibility, Deadpool and Wolverine strives for sincerity at times.

Honoring the Legacy of Fox’s X-Men Films

Some of its cameos and plot turns are clearly designed to pay tribute to Fox’s X-Men films from the early 2000s. In 2024, Deadpool and Wolverine is the first to feature Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan playing in the MCU sandbox, and it’s also the first R-rated MCU movie. Given its play with the concept of the multiverse and bringing characters like Wade and Logan into the MCU fold for the first time, there’s potential for Deadpool and Wolverine to impact the ongoing Multiverse Saga and alter the course of the MCU as we know it.

The Uncertain Future of Deadpool in the MCU

However, it remains to be seen how the MCU changes now that Deadpool has left his mark and whether these characters will appear again in future movies like Avengers: Secret Wars. Deadpool and Wolverine is a Marvel movie that revolves around a battle between good and evil for control of a MacGuffin device. The film follows Wade and Logan as they race against time to stop Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova from harnessing the Time Ripper, a machine originally invented by Ke Huy Quan’s character O.B. from the Loki series.

Cassandra intends to use the Time Ripper to destroy every branch of the multiverse, leaving her free to reign supreme inside the Void. After battling through the Deadpool Corps, Wade and Logan make it inside the TVA. They learn that the only way to stop Cassandra is for someone to access the machine powering the timer and serve as a physical bridge connecting the matter and anti-matter components. However, this will cause a chain reaction that destroys the timer and annihilates the person in the process. Wolverine is happy to make that sacrifice, but Wade sabotages the act of sacrifice and puts himself in Logan’s place.

A New Beginning for Wade and Logan

As Wade struggles to connect the two halves of the machine, Logan barges in and joins hands with his new buddy, allowing them to complete the circuit and successfully sabotage the Time Ripper. This crossover movie involves working together, and both heroes suffer a painful death by molecular annihilation. The movie ends with two Wolverines existing on Earth (10005) while the Logan movie unfolds in 2029. While the Logan version of Wolverine may be doomed, he hasn’t technically died yet. It’s possible that the rest of the X-Men are still alive, assuming this is before an ailing Charles Xavier accidentally murders all his students via telepathy.

A Sentimental Farewell

Deadpool and Wolverine does things differently than previous Deadpool movies, eschewing the traditional MCU mid-credits sequence in favor of showing a montage of behind-the-scenes clips from Fox’s various Marvel movies, all to the tune of Green Day’s “Good Riddance.” As much as the film pokes fun at the Fox universe, this is its way of paying a sentimental tribute to those films. The film also features a special guest appearance by Hugh Jackman, who is praised for his abs.
