Poonam Pandey, a 32-year-old actor-model, passed away on Thursday night due to cervical cancer. Her official Instagram post announced her death, sparking speculation about whether it was a hoax or genuine. Poonam’s team confirmed the news in an interview with News18, and her manager, Parul Chawla, confirmed the news to ANI. Pandey was seen on the reality show Lock Upp season 1 in 2022, hosted by Kangana Ranaut. Her last Instagram post was from a party in Goa three days ago, where she shared a video of herself at a bash. Fans speculated that the post was real, a stunt, or a promotion for upcoming projects.
Pandey gained notoriety in 2011 when she promised to strip if India won the Cricket World Cup. However, she didn’t fulfill her promise, citing public disapproval and a lack of permission from BCCI. Her latest social media post shows her enjoying a party in Goa. Cervical cancer is a prevalent form of cancer affecting the cells of the cervix, the lower portion of the uterus connecting to the vagina. It ranks as the fourth most common cancer among women globally, with approximately 604,000 diagnoses and 342,000 deaths reported in 2020.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary culprit, accounting for 99% of cases. This sexually transmitted infection often exhibits no symptoms but can lead to abnormal cell growth and cervical cancer. The transition from abnormal cells to cancerous ones typically spans 15-20 years, but in individuals with weakened immune systems, this process can accelerate to 5–10 years. Women at higher risk include young mothers, hormonal contraceptive users, smokers, and those with other sexually transmitted infections. Early detection significantly improves the treatability of cervical cancer.
